Section Info:
Political violence is ubiquitous. States, non-state actors (e.g., rebel groups, terrorist organizations), and individuals often resort to the use of violence in the pursuit of political goals, with potentially devastating consequences. Political violence takes many forms, including but not limited to: interstate war, civil conflict, terrorism, genocide, state repression, and riots. In this course, we will explore the scholarly study of political violence. The course is divided into six sections. After brief introduction, we will examine the logics of political violence in general (strategic, psychological, normative). We will then examine specific types of political violence, focusing on violence between/against states (wars and coups), violence within communities (communal violence and riots), and violence against civilians (terrorism, repression, genocide). We will conclude by exploring an alternative: non-violent resistance. Prerequisites: None.
