Experimental Biophysics: Physics students in this advanced laboratory course will do 5 experiments that have won Nobel Prizes for their inventors—plus a few more experiments—all related to using physics to understand biology. You do NOT need to know any biology to take the course (but be willing to learn). These will be 1. Optical Trapping (2018); 2. Super-resolution Microscopy (2014); 3. The Luria-Delbruck experimental on fluctuation methods to determine the role of mutations in evolution (1969); 4. The discovery of the 3rd domain of life, Archaea, by U of Illinois Carl Woese (2003, Craaford Prize); 5. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR, 1993); 5. Computational prediction of protein folding (2013, and one shortly!); 6. Electricity in you: Measuring nerve conduction; 7. Optical detection of magnetic imaging using single (quantum) “bits” of diamonds.
