Credit: 3 hours.

Examination of the historical contexts in which sexuality has been debated during the past three centuries, and to what extent sexuality is perceived differently in diverse cultures. Part one will look at the Western tradition, especially Germany. Part two will shift focus to the non-Western world, especially to the colonial history of Indonesia.

Topic: Sexuality and Literature: This course will explore depictions and discussions of sexuality in the premodern world. It will feature a chronological exploration of the use of sex and sexuality in literary works composed before the year 1500 AD from across the globe, including those from the African, Arabic, East and South Asian, Mesoamerican, and Western European contexts. Throughout this exploration, we will interrogate the existence and definition of the idea of “sexuality” and analyze how conceptions of sexuality vary across diverse cultures, as well as how they change and evolve over time. Key themes will also include the impact of religion, gender, and social organization on conceptions of sexuality, and on points of contact, influence, and exchange between premodern societies.
