The art, techniques, culture, and politics of French-language film and media (such as television, music and art) in a global context. Film and media in this course provide insight into the formation of cultural, political and linguistic identities as well as the history, techniques and technologies of the media landscape in the French-speaking world. This course may be taught in English or in French; check with the instructor.

A selective voyage across the history of photography from its inception to contemporary online practices, with incursions into film, in francophone contexts. We will explore how visual technologies have shaped and continue to shape our perception and understanding of ourselves and of societies, and how they can contribute to enforce – or subvert – relations of power and ideologies. Who is gazing? How? Who is being gazed at? Why? Taught in French.
