This class will explore this axiom with a focus on the skills central to the healing arts applying them in the health professions and also sales, consulting, teaching, and all sorts of work that rely on listening. Topics include active listening, narrative, cultural competency, research-based communication design, interprofessional collaboration, healthcare information technology, healthcare organizations and professions, and the future of work.

Section Info:
Webs of communication connections are integral to how teams, families, organizations, and communities work. We will collect, visualize, and analyze network data to investigate the inherent connectedness of life, and in the process, we will develop analytical and computational skills by making arguments with data. We will also look at examples from research on gossip, innovation, job seeking, criminal networks, government agencies, social media platforms, virtual worlds, interorganizational linkages, disaster response and recovery, and why all of us are just six degrees away from our favorite actors.

Media and Crime
Section Info:
Depictions of crime, police, and the criminal legal system more broadly are ubiquitous throughout our mass media ecosystem. How are these various objects portrayed across different media, and what effect do they have on the attitudes of media users? In this course, students will explore the sociopolitical implications of news coverage and entertainment depictions of crime and the criminal legal system. We will also examine how media industry practices and the activities of political elites at various levels of government contribute to such depictions.
