Additional fees may apply. See Class Schedule. 1 to 3 undergraduate hours. 1 to 4 graduate hours. May be repeated to a maximum of 9 undergraduate hours or 12 graduate hours if topics vary. Prerequisite: Restricted to students with Junior standing.

A student registered in one or more Art & Design course(s) exhibiting this message, will be assessed a $95 facility use fee once each term.

Have your interests ever turned to ceramics, but you’ve never fit it into your practice? This class is intended for advanced majors and graduate students in Art & Design and affiliated disciplines who are looking to expand their working methods to include clay and ceramic practices into an already established body of work or capstone project. Contemporary artists across disciplines who are not formally trained as “ceramists” incorporate clay objects into their practices as an integral component of their photography, painting, video, sculpture, performance, and printmaking work. Designers utilize clay for its unique material qualities and familiar utility across a broad spectrum of applications. This class is for advanced students, no prior clay experience is required. The goal is to integrate the creation of clay and ceramic processes into your evolving body of work—maybe as a one-off project, or as a sustained addition to your material vocabulary. As such, the course will be treated as a workshop that will focus on instructor-guided independent exploration and project development based on individual goals. Please note that this class will meet one day per week at Flagg Hall, and once per week at Studio 4/Ceramics at South Studio to accommodate project needs and transportation limitations.
