ARTH 535: Seminar in Baroque Art: "The Evidence of Art, 1600-1700." Examination of the ways in which seventeenth-century European image-makers produced visual ‘evidence’ during a period off increasing concern with the nature of truth and the methods of its verification; readings drawn from art history, history of science, history of philosophy, history of religion; topics include cult images, botanical images, artistic engagement with rhetorical and empirical conceptions of evidence, art and skepticism, Caravaggio, Rubens, and Velazquez.
