Section Title:
School as Socially Engaged Art
Section Info:
Special Topics in Art Education: What Happens if We Position School as a Socially Engaged Arts Lab? Course description: What if we look at school as a socially engaged arts lab? While the field of art education has many discussions about arts integration and learning through creative practice, if we position the school as a platform for social engaged artistic interventions, is there a potential for a shift in our understanding of art education? To map out this leap, this course will look at both contemporary community arts practices and socially engaged or social practice artists. Community Arts includes artists, educators, and cultural workers who provide art experiences to participants outside of traditional K-12 schooling. With the educational turn in contemporary art and the evolving field of socially engage art there is renewed interest in community arts practices and embracing the role of artist as cultural worker or educator. Inspired by projects like The Laundromat project, Open School East, and Group Material’s Democracy, 1988-1989 Project, we will explore the ways in which socially engaged projects can provide spaces for students to learn through the arts and connect to their larger community. When a school becomes a socially engaged project space, it opens up opportunities for researchers to bring their work into the school in a mutually beneficial and reciprocal relationship. The project of this course will be to design a socially engage art project for a K-12 school. This can be in the form of an afterschool workshop or design in partnership with a classroom teacher to be activated during the school day. This course will culminate in an exhibition and publication of the research and work that was implemented in the schools.
