This seminar explores a range of historical and contemporary documentary performances such as living newspapers, docudramas, verbatim performances, theatre of witness, and tribunal theatre. We investigate the dramaturgical methods of documentary performance makers whose work builds on the archive, oral histories, and physical embodiment of the past in their reconstructions and interventions into historical narratives. In the first part of the seminar, we examine critical and theatrical texts in Dramaturgy of the Real on the World Stage, ed. Carol Martin. In the second part of the semester, students will develop individual documentary scripts/performances or research projects on significant performances of the “Real.”
