Credit: 3 hours.

Panoramic view of Latin American cultures since the end of the colonial period (roughly 1820) to the present. Examination of the major debates, authors and cultural issues that shaped those cultures or that were shaped by them. Specific themes may vary by semester, and may include the following: slavery, colonialism and neocolonialism, revolution, mestizaje, gender, the state, and modernization. Analysis will include diverse cultural phenomena, as well as consideration of cultural perspectives and practices.

May be repeated in separate terms to a maximum of 6 hours, if topics vary. Prerequisite: SPAN 228.

TOPIC TITLE: Journey to the Metaverse: Contemporary Social Movements and Internet Culture. In this course we will examine a sample of Internet born and reborn (materials recuperated and revalued for the online universe) that showcase new approaches towards issues of sexuality, gender, nationality and beyond. The eclectic selection of materials ranging from literary genres (i.e. novels and fanfictions) and audiovisual materials (movies, YouTube shows or digital art) serve to explore current movements, as well as their cultural and contextual significance. Secondly, the will also contribute to discussions of Latin America’s intervention in global and transnational cultural trends. Students will work on analyzing the audiovisual and semantic construction of these texts from a variety of Hispanic locations including, but not limited to, Chile, Argentina and Mexico. By the end of the course students will gain an understanding of polítical, social and cultural movements that frame these samples.
