Credit: 3 hours Section Info: This three-credit course provides a theoretical introduction to the concept of “wilderness,” along with the practical and political challenges that federal agencies face when managing wilderness areas in the national park system. Our four class sessions in the second half of Spring 2022 will explore the theory of wilderness, wilderness regulations, recreational management, the politics of national parks, and effects of these things on ecosystems and natural processes. We will also have an orientation session to help prepare you for the field experience. The course concludes with a ten-day field experience in Yellowstone National Park and adjacent national forest lands, including a seven-day backpacking trip.
