This field course will travel to southern Minnesota and the Black Hills of South Dakota focusing on two aspects of regional geology: 1) the glacial geology and geomorphology related to the catastrophic drainage of Glacial Lake Aggasiz through what is now the Minnesota River Valley and 2) the geologic history of the Black Hills of South Dakota from Precambrian granite and pegmatite to Tertiary uplift and volcanism. Background in geology is assumed and the course is intended primarily for geology majors and graduate students. Prerequisites: at least one 400-level geology course and permission of the instructor. 4hrs. Field trip fee required.
