Regional geography of Africa south of the Sahara. Geographic analysis of Africa which includes topics in both physical and human geography and provides a general overview of the processes and interactions between human and environmental factors that shape Africa's physical and human geography.

Emphasizing continental dynamism, connection, and multiplicity, this upper-division course explores current debates animating scholarship of and from African contexts through a relational geographic approach. Course themes include: representations of the continent; colonialism and de/coloniality; development debates; political ecology of natural resources and climate change; geographies of health and wellbeing; urbanization trends; experiences of infrastructure and informality; mobility and belonging; technology, and future imaginaries. We’ll work with these themes and debates in a discussion-based class, drawing on local scholarship and specific case studies.
