Corporate Finance
Section Info:
Registration in this section is restricted to students who have earned a Bachelor's Degree. This section explores how financial investments can affect decisions, strategy, and ultimately business operations as well as personal portfolio. We will study and use risk-return models, such as the capital asset pricing model (CAPM), and multi-factor models to evaluate the performance of various securities and portfolios. Building upon this framework, learn about market efficiency and behavioral finance as common behavioral biases of investors are introduced. Also see their potential effects on wealth accumulation and asset prices. We will also analyze money-management strategies and performance by institutional investors, such as mutual funds and pension funds. Finally, connect investment finance with corporate finance by examining firm valuation techniques.

Social Impact Investing
Section Info:
Social impact investing may be described as a bridge between two well-established disciplines, private equity and philanthropy. Like philanthropy, impact investing is driven by an intention to create a positive societal or environmental change in its investment sphere. Incorporating process methods of the private equity model, we will review direct investment strategies and consider various ways to leverage capital markets as part of mission-driven efforts. This course considers the perspective of both investor and manager/entrepreneur in seeking paths for solving intractable societal problems while generating financial return.

Appl. of Derivative Strategies
Section Info:
Application of Derivative Strategies is designed to build upon the basic options knowledge you may have gained in Financial Derivatives in FIN 512. If you haven’t taken that class but have some options knowledge through experience or via the Market Information Lab Options bootcamp, you can still be successful in this class. We will start slowly by discussing some simple trading strategies that are used by institutional and retail accounts alike. We will move from there to discuss volatility trading looking not only at the CBOE VIX product but also at OTC variance swaps. Finally, by the end of the semester, we will be discussing the most topical options and derivatives structures such as risk parity, risk premia capture, alternative risk premia and volatility targeting.
