SP22 CW 208 - This course introduces students to the fundamental techniques of creative nonfiction, what we have come to know as creative nonfiction “craft.” We explore these techniques through diverse readings as well as through the writing and workshopping of our own creative nonfiction essays. Each week is dedicated to a specific craft technique, pairing exemplary CNF essays with “craft essays” meant to illuminate, for instance, literary structure or point-of-view or narrative voice. Additionally, we focus on three modes of CNF: the personal essay, the public essay, and the lyric essay. Across this work, we address enduring questions about the nature of language and literary expression. Why do we write and for whom? What truths—both personal and public, timely and timeless—can CNF help us address as individuals and as a culture? What can CNF achieve that other genres cannot?
