Rhetoric and Culture

This seminar examines scholarship at the intersection of rhetoric and culture, including areas such as intercultural rhetoric, comparative rhetoric, “cultural rhetorics” frameworks, and critical intercultural communication. Our goal will be to understand the ways that cultural approaches can and should inform rhetorical studies both implicitly and explicitly. We will examine how culture, broadly defined, influences rhetorical practices and understandings, and how rhetorical practices reflect specific cultural communities. The course will also examine critical perspectives about the ways that structure and power shape cultural dynamics through race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality and class. The goal of the seminar is to construct an argument for the study of rhetoric from a critical (inter-)cultural perspective.
