BHWELL Field Seminar
Section Info:
Synchronous online Zoom sessions will be held on: 8/24, 9/14, 9/28, 10/12, 10/26 and 11/9/2022 from 6:30-8:00 pm. This course provides support through a team-based approach for BHWELL scholars during field placement, while highlighting techniques, skills and evidence-based practices that students will need to function at a high level as a clinical social worker and behavioral health consultant in primary care settings, with emphasis on underserved populations and areas as defined by HRSA. This course is required for BHWELL scholars on the integration of behavior health (IBH) and primary care. Participants will learn and process the application of IBH models, skills, and resources for implementation and inter-professional practice.

Motivational Interviewing
Section Info:
This course focuses on building students' skills in Motivational Interviewing, an evidence-based method for talking with people who are ambivalent about change. This course differentiates the counseling method from other counseling approachrd and teaches students the practice theory upon which the counseling method is built. Ample time is devoted to practicing skills via role plays. Skills developed include reflective listening skills, formulation of questions, and directive methods that are distinct in MI. Special attention is devoted to applying Motivational Interviewing with diverse populations and across varied target problems.

Students are introduced to the fundamentals of brief cognitive-behavioral therapy for treating a wide range of human problems, crises, and mental health conditions. Content includes (1) conceptualizing case formulations; (2) identifying appropriate treatment goals; (3) developing comprehensive and differential treatment plans; (4) conducting brief interventions; and (5) evaluating client outcomes using research, consultation, and supervision.

Participants will explore current issues in the field related to the intersection between young children with disabilities and trauma. Specifically, topics will focus on the provision of trauma-informed care, work with families, self-care, prevention, and building awareness related to the connection between trauma and disability. Additionally, there will be a focus on cross-disciplinary work to enhance services for young children.
