Section Title:
Design Lrng & Cogntn Seminar
Section Info:
Design is central to engineering: It is embedded in how we educate engineers, it’s a core part of the engineering profession. This course provides a graduate-level introduction into the nature of design and the process of becoming a designer. The overall aim of this course is to provide frameworks for investigating (1) design learning (what do people know or come to understand about design? How does learning occur?) and (2) design cognition (how do cognitive theories help in understanding how people learn and do design?). This course also provides self-reflection experiences for students to better understand their own (evolving) approaches to design. The one- hour seminar will focus on empirical studies and conceptual frameworks about design cognition and learning, written reflections, and group discussions. This course targets upper division undergraduates and graduate students in engineering design with an interest in design learning. Students from Education, ACES, and other colleges are welcome provided they meet the course prerequisites. Prerequisites: Introductory design course (e.g. SE101, ME170) and Capstone design (e.g. SE495, ME470)

The four-hour project version of the class will build on the seminar but will also include two course projects that will require the student to synthesize, evaluate, and put into action course ideas. This course targets upper division undergraduates and graduate students in engineering design with an interest in design learning.
