Directed and supervised investigation of selected topics in information studies that may include among others the social, political, and historical contexts of information creation and dissemination; computers and culture; information policy; community information systems; production, retrieval and evaluation of knowledge; computer-mediated communication.

Additional fees may apply. See Class Schedule. 2 to 4 undergraduate hours. 2 to 4 graduate hours. Approved for Letter and S/U grading. May be repeated. Prerequisite: For undergraduates, junior standing and IS 202, or consent of instructor.

INSTRUCTOR APPROVAL REQUIRED: Email Ruth Shasteen at rshaste2@illinois.edu. This course provides the opportunity for reflection and application of content knowledge, research, and evidence-based practices in school libraries. Guest speakers, discussions, forum posts and presentations will focus on essential questions in topics including advocacy, access, critical cataloging, censorship, research and inquiry, and media literacy. The culminating project evaluates students’ growth and demonstrates the impact coursework and experience has had on their professional practice, particularly related to culturally responsive teaching and leading. The student will apply research and evidence-based practices to an issue relevant to their learning community. The culminating project will result in a product that addresses the issue and identifies possible solutions.
