FA22 ENGL 524 Lori Newcomb Re-reading Embodiment in Early Modern Britain Early modern Britain conceived the categories of human embodiment, including gender, sexuality, status, religion, nature, and race, as deeply intertwined yet surprisingly fluid. This seminar asks how and why, amidst this fluidity, whiteness became the most fiercely defended construction of embodied difference. Primary readings will include texts, literary and nonliterary, written in or translated into English between 1550 and 1660. Secondary readings include current scholarship by Kim F. Hall, Ania Loomba, Imtiaz Habib, Bernadette Andrea, Ayanna Thompson, David Sterling Brown, and Patricia Akhimie, among others. A further focus of the seminar will be the ambivalent role of printed books in disseminating various constructions of embodiment to British readerships. Student projects will include interpretive work on the materiality of primary texts in our Rare Book and Manuscript Library.
