Topic: Black Liberation Theologies Description: At their core Black and Womanist theologies seek to dismantle theologies and social arrangements that contribute to Black estrangement as a manifestation of cultural productions within the context of anti-blackness and misogynoir (misogony directed toward Black women). This course examines Black and Womanist theologies as modes of liberation and performances of freedom that materialize from the question of Black existence and identity in American life. We will consider theological and hermeneutical motifs in the domain of Black and Womanist theologies, as well as the intersection of theory and praxis. Meets with: REL 494

Beginning with the 16th century transatlantic slave trade, to 20th century civil rights activism and the current Black Lives Matter movement, students will historicize the formation of black religious communities, migrations and social movements throughout US history.
