Meets Summer 2B. Topic: "JEWISH MUSIC IN A GLOBAL CONTEXT." This course surveys Jewish musical culture in multiple recent and present-day global contexts and examines musical attributes, musical meaning, and ritual practice. We will also explore relationships between musical sound and social identity among diverse Jewish music makers in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa, considering matters such as diaspora, memory, and ecstatic experience.
