Seminar devoted to intensive study in the music of specific peoples, states, or geographic regions from around the world.

3 undergraduate hours. No graduate credit. May be repeated to a maximum of 12 undergraduate hours if topic varies. Prerequisite: MUS 313 and MUS 314; junior standing; or consent of instructor.

This course surveys Jewish musical culture in multiple recent and present-day global contexts and examines musical attributes, musical meaning, and ritual practice. We will also explore relationships between musical sound and social identity among diverse Jewish music makers in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa, considering matters such as diaspora, memory, and ecstatic experience. Restriction(s): Not intended for students with Graduate class standing.
