Offers students a comprehensive understanding of the role that big tech companies and their platforms and products play in daily life. Topics include hashtag activism, digital surveillance, algorithmic inequality and search bias, data privacy, monopoly and anti-trust, changes to the news industry, and the "internet yuck" of hate speech and harassment. Students will be required to take a 24-hour technology fast.

Credit not given for JOUR 102 if credit already received for JOUR 199 section "Social Media".
