Credit: 4 hours.

First course in social statistics for students without mathematics beyond the high school level; topics include the role of statistics in social science inquiry, measures of central tendency and dispersion, simple correlation techniques, contingency analysis, and introduction to statistical inference; includes the statistical analysis of social science data using personal computers.

Same as GEOG 280. Credit is not given for SOC 280 if credit for a college level introductory statistics course has been earned.

Priority will be given to Sociology and Geography majors.

Section Info:
This course brings together data analytics, data visualization and introductory statistical methods to make sense of social problems. Together, we are going to learn and use R-studio in this class (students are not expected to have any R backgrounds). In addition to focus on the application of statistics in sociology, SOC 280 will prepare students for further rigorous quantitative, computational, and data analytics courses in the future. This course will be administrated mostly asynchronously with some synchronous lectures throughout the semester.
