Credit: 4 hours.

Prepares students for the various phases of preparing for and doing ethnomusicological fieldwork and ethnographic analysis and writing. Beginning with the project design and grand-writing stages, participants study and practice fieldwork techniques such as participant observations, interviewing, writing and analyzing field notes, and audio and video recording. The politics and ethics of fieldwork and ethnographic writing are considered through readings and discussion. Finally, a variety of approaches to ethnographic writing are considered through the study of finished musical ethnographies.

Prerequisite: MUS 512 or consent of instructor.
