Topic: Nation, Ethnicity and Race in Modern Italy. The course explores the rise of nationalism and racism and the resistance against nationalism and racism in the Italian cultural tradition in the 19th and 20th centuries. The main goal of the seminar is to challenge Italian narratives that present Italian nationalism as immune from racial connotations and racism as foreign to the Italian nationalist tradition. The course analyses both literary and non literary sources. A crucial emphasis will be placed on the rise of fascism, the Holocaust and the resistance to fascism. The class is in English.
