Section Info: Description:Examines the history of African American women, beginning with their West African origins before the trans-Atlantic slave trade era, emphasizing their experiences in the United States through their political, civic, community and reform organizing and radical activism from arrival in the Americas to the present. Particular attention is given to the colonial, slavery and antebellum, Jim Crow, and Civil Rights periods, all analyzed through the interconnected context of racism, sexism, and economic deprivation. Women in the worldwide African diaspora, as well as the impact of Black feminisms/womanism, Black internationalism, and the cultural and political contributions of Black women, are also considered.
