3 undergraduate hours. 3 graduate hours. May be repeated in separate terms, as topics vary, to a maximum of 6 hours. Prerequisite: When the course is taught in English, there are no prerequisites. When the course is taught in German, the recommendation is GER 212 or consent of the instructor.

GER 465 - Spring 2021. Topic: Die deutsche Sprache in Österreich. This course explores the German language in Austria from a sociolinguistic perspective. Course topics include the linguistic history of Austria, pluricentricity and standard language variation, Austrian dialects, language contact and linguistic minorities, language policy, multilingualism, and second language pedagogy. The course is taught in German; students who have not taken GER 212 or do not have equivalent language proficiency should obtain instructor consent to enroll. The course is taught online via synchronous video sessions at the scheduled time.
