River Dynamics
Section Info:
River systems throughout the world are increasingly being affected by human modification of the environment. These effects are particularly acute in intensively managed landscapes. This course will examine how intensive management is influencing geomorphic, biogeochemical, and ecological characteristics of river systems. It will use the National Science Foundation's Critical Zone Collavorative Network as a framework for exploring current research on rives in IMLs. The focus will be on river systems in the Midwest, but systems from other environments will also be considered.

Rivers, deltas, & coasts
Section Info:
The large rivers, deltas and coasts of the world are home to billions of people, and are regions of intense agriculture, industrial and urban productivity that provide key ecosystem services. Yet, humans living in these environments have never faced such severe anthropogenic stresses that threaten many aspects of ecosystem and societal functioning – from provision of water, protein, and agricultural yield to infrastructure support for some of the world’s largest megacities. This course will seek to provide an up-to-date synthesis of the range of issues facing the world’s large rivers, deltas and associated coasts and identify the magnitude and frequency of these stressors, and the management options that may be required. The course will view these elements from the perspective of both contemporary environments as well as deep-time, and learning will be based around lectures, presentations and group projects. The course will be run jointly with Chris Fielding (University of Nebraska Lincoln) and Thaiënne van Dijk (Deltares, Netherlands), and will centrally feature lectures from a range of global experts researching rivers, deltas and coasts. Assessment will be based around research projects, essay, discussion sessions and presentations based on literature reviews. Our aim will be to enable the class to gain a global view on these environments that are vital to humankind.
