Topic: Cultures of Collecting in Early Modern Europe. This seminar will investigate diverse cultures of collecting in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Europe, with a particular focus on the multiple functions of the new phenomenon of the Cabinet of Curiosity or Wunderkammer. We will engage with a growing body of scholarship exploring topics including: early modern theories of collecting and display in relation to emergent concepts of natural and material knowledge; collecting and the construction of the exotic; the shifting social and cultural value ascribed to works of art as collectible objects circulating in an expanding commercial marketplace. Synchronous online.
