Section Title:
Art and the End of the World
Section Info:
Topic: Art and the End of the World. In this seminar we will consider the aesthetics of the end times—that is, how artists historically responded to moments of perceived apocalypse, when “the world as we know it” seemed to be ending. Questions to be addressed include, What is a world? Whose world is represented? In such moments, how are feelings of loss and mourning related to hopes, desires, and visions for whatever might come next? If apocalypse is sometimes understood as revelation, what is revealed or laid bare? What formal strategies have artists turned to or devised in the face of these circumstances? This course satisfies the seminar requirement for art history majors and minors, and students should be prepared to undertake a substantial amount of reading and writing. Although registration is restricted to Juniors and Seniors, advanced Sophomores who are interested in the course may contact the instructor. Synchronous online.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to students with Junior or Senior class standing. Restricted to Undergrad - Urbana-Champaign.
