Learning in Community
Section Info:
This course is a problem-based service learning course emphasizing using student skills gained in other ACE, ECON, RHET, and other courses and applying them as a team to solving a real-world question or problem of a client organization, firm, or program. The Illinois students in the ACE 499 LC course will work in small teams (virtually) along with several Njala University students (Sierra Leone) to answer the question from their client. The course has been offered 5 times and each time the students deal with a different and new question. At the end of the course, the students will have completed a significant report together (which can be listed on the student’s resume as a product) and they will have made a group presentation to the client. Along the way the students will gain experience in cross-cultural teamwork and they will learn a lot about project management and the realities of agriculture, business, development and related fields.
