The ‘Oriental’ on the European Stage For Edward Said, Orientalist tropes are “to the actual Orient or Islam as stylized costumes are to characters in a play.” Taking Said’s hint at the crucial role that theater played in the formation of Western Orientalism, we will examine the ‘Oriental’ as a recurring figure on the European stage from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. Does the ‘Oriental’ exist, and if so, express the same ideas across Europe and throughout the centuries? In other words, is “the Orientalist stage a system of moral and epistemological rigor,” as Said claims? To explore these questions we will consider each play’s historical and aesthetic (national) context. Students will read the plays either in their original language or in English translation. Class discussion will be in English, and aspects of literary and cultural translation will be an important dimension of this course. Texts by Shakespeare, Marlowe, Cervantes, Racine, Voltaire, and Lessing. Meets with SPAN 590, ENGL 564, CWL 561 & FR 579.
