Demographic Theories & Data
Section Info:
This graduate seminar offers students the opportunity to gain familiarity with core theoretical approaches to the study of Demography (mortality, fertility, and migration). We will critically examine the utility of existing approaches through specific regional and national case studies, examine core factors of continuity and change in demographic processes across time, regions, and social groups. Participants will gain insight into the availability and utility of census, vital statistics, survey, and qualitative data resources in demography and develop a mastery of basic demographic measures computation, validity, and reliability through these readings and discussions. Through a variety of oral and written requirements, participants will gain experience in presenting issues of demographic concern to communities, policymakers, and scholarly audiences. The purpose of this course is to familiarize graduate students with contemporary themes and methods in organizational research on inequality. This course should provide graduate students with a solid basis from which to pursue research and teaching in organizational sociology, as well as in related areas such as social stratification, social psychology, organization and management theory, industrial relations, and labor markets.
