Explores the reasons behind the world-wide rise of religion as a key player in the public sphere, and the implications for politics in the contemporary world. The major religions of the world are considered, but with a focus on the Islamic revival and Muslim societies. Students will learn about the secularization debate, religious revivals and globalization, global fundamentalisms, religion and democracy, and post-secular and post-Islamist societies.
