Field based course that exposes students to procedures and methods used in various resource settings in a hands-on manner. Includes weekly field trips to visit representative natural resource and environmental science settings with supporting laboratory exercises. Content of offerings vary by section, but all focus on resource management, environmental quality and assessment, and effects of consumption and use on the environment. Field trips required.

Additional fees may apply. See Class Schedule. May be repeated in the same or subsequent semesters to a maximum of 6 hours. Prerequisite: NRES 201 and NRES 219.

Section Title:
Fisheries Field Techniques
Section Info:
The objective of this course is to provide students with hands-on experience and training in standard methods and techniques used by fisheries scientists. This will be accomplished through a combination of field- and laboratory-based learning modules where students will learn collection techniques, data analysis methods and report writing. By the conclusion of the course, students will have an improved understanding of project design, data collection/management and field applications. Students will be required to take one (1) off-site Saturday field trip to a fisheries field station during this course, date to be determined (most likely in early October). Mammal Field Techniques
Section Info:
Saturday 9am-1pm with exceptions for survey techniques being taught when hours may change (e.g., evening surveys). This course will introduce students to the variety of techniques used to study mammalian ecology and conservation. We will focus on trapping, surveying, and monitoring mammals in Illinois. Field trips will provide students with hands-on experience of commonly used field techniques. Students will be responsible for their own field-appropriate clothing. Lectures will be kept to a minimum before and after each field trip. This section will have a field trip fee of $90. Soil Judging Field Experience
Section Info:
Laboratory and field course involving description, interpretation, and classification of soil profiles. Depending on availability and COVID restrictions, this course may include travel to local sites or to compete in the Regional Soil Judging Competition (dates to be announced, usually in October, location varies, and it may encompass a four-day trip, host school sets the schedule). Prerequisite: completion of NRES 201. This section will have a field trip fee of $200.
