Topic: "THE SINGING VOICE AS OBJECT." The singing voice has always been one of the most important aspects of the musical experience. It has attracted the attention of the listener and of the performance participant in a more personal and direct way than any other recognizable characteristics of musical sound. Listeners often understand the singing voice as an artistic and cultural object: an autonomous entity that carries its own emotional power and musical meaning. However, the singing voice has been one of the most neglected aspects of music analysis, theory, and musicological inquiry. This course concerns this paradox. Ultimately this course will address the following question: What are the processes and characteristics that lead to the experience of certain voices as exceptional and musically fascinating? Based on multiple analytical approaches (theories of performance, reception, performance practice, mediation, and production) we will attempt a cultural analysis of voice as a musical object. Instruction and discussion will focus on celebrated cases of singers whose voice enchanted audiences, from a variety of cases and genres (possible cases can be Enrico Caruso, Maria Callas, Ella Fitzgerald, Umm Kulthum etc.). Instruction and discussion will entail five interrelated layers: listening appreciation, biography, aesthetics and musical analysis, mediation, and broader historical and cultural context.
