3 undergraduate hours. No graduate credit. May be repeated in the same or separate terms to a maximum of 12 hours. Prerequisite: Consent of the department.

Intro to Category Theory
Section Info:
Introduction to Category Theory. Prerequisite: Math 416 and either Math 427 or excellent performance in Math 417. Math 424 or some knowledge of topology is a plus but not required. Topics include definition of a category, categories of sets with structure and less obvious categories, epis and monos, initial and terminal objects, products, hom-sets, duality, coproducts, equalizers, coequalizers, functors and natural transformations, limits and colimits, categories of diagrams, Yoneda embedding, limits and colimits in categories of diagrams, adjoint functors from several points of view, and monads. If time permits applications to CS such as lambda calculus will be explored.
