Disability and Film
Section Info:
This course examines disability as it is managed, represented, and erased by the film industry. Hollywood is known for putting able-bodied actors in “disability drag” as Oscar-bait. In the meantime, disabled actors are passed over while able-bodied actors play wheelchair users, schizophrenics, and the visually impaired. Questions we will consider: How does the mainstream film industry assume an able-bodied, able-minded audience? How does film made for and by disabled people differ? In addition to looking at films where disability is portrayed, we will also look at films done in entirely ASL (American Sign Language), and descriptive audio films for the visually impaired. Screenings will be accompanied by readings in disability and culture. Requirements include active participation, a midterm, and a take home final exam. My overall conception of this course is that we should have a lot of fun and enjoy these fantastic films.
