This course surveys film from its origins through the 1940s. We consider stylistic, cultural, industrial, and technological perspectives on world cinema in lectures, discussions, and screenings of a diverse selection of classic films. Students gain a foundation in cinematic history and form, preparing them for advanced cinema studies courses.
