Section Title:
The Minds of Modernism
Section Info:
Andrew Gaedtke - Modernism and Its Afterlives - Literary modernism is generally regarded as an era of intense formal experimentation and cultural innovation which emerged around the time of the first world war and exhausted itself by the arrival of the second world war. However, recent works of British and Irish literature exhibit signs of a revival of neo-modernist tendencies which challenges conventional periodizing definitions of modernism. This seminar will begin by reviewing the core formal characteristics and cultural crises that defined literary modernism through foundational texts that reshaped the literary field for a generation. We will then examine the uses to which those techniques and concerns have been put by writers in recent decades. We will evaluate the ways that stream-of-consciousness narration, unusual linguistic effects, and deformations of narrative time have been deployed in order to represent lived experiences of immigration, racial and ethnic divisions, historical trauma, and psychiatric disorders in contemporary British and Irish fiction. The seminar will also consider the unique challenges of assessing works of the present era, and we will consider the ways that these works both perform and theorize their own historical and cultural genealogies. Readings will likely include works by James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Nella Larsen, George Lamming, Zadie Smith, Eimear McBride, Guy Gunaratne, Will Self, and others.
