Debates in Modern Korean Hist.
Section Info:
This course will be offered online via BTAA CourseShare utilizing Zoom and Canvas. Instructor: Prof. Russell Burge at Indiana University. This graduate seminar offers an introduction to themes and debates in modern Korean history, beginning with the late Chosŏn period and working through colonial occupation, national division, and the divergent histories of North and South Korea. Drawing from both classic as well as newer English-language works, this course will familiarize students with debates on Korean history concerning topics as varied as war, identity formation, knowledge production, and protest. In addition to synthesizing the contributions of the writers under discussion, we will also explore the limitations of the field as well as its possible futures.

Prosody of East Asian Lang
Section Info:
This course explores the way prosody is used in speech communication with special attention to East Asian Languages. Prosody is the music of speech. It is the part of the speech signal where speakers control pitch, timing, loudness and voice quality to convey meanings beyond the sequence of words. The course materials will draw heavily from the rich resources of East Asian languages, which include a fascinating array of prosody typology including tone languages (Chinese and most Chinese dialects) and accentual languages (Japanese and Korean).
