Text as Visual Culture
Section Info:
Topic: Text as Visual Culture. This course explores the relationship between “text” and “image” by looking at the visuality and materiality of writing. We will examine how visual and verbal systems work alongside one another, overlap, and conflict. We will discuss the imagistic dimensions of writing and consider questions of visual literacy. Case studies will largely be drawn from the ancient world, including Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley, China, and Mesoamerica. Later on, we will explore how the act of writing and our relationship to it is continuously transformed through the introduction of new media and technologies, from the printing press to the myriad digital platforms we interact with today. The seminar will include lecture, discussion, museum visits, and object-based labs.
