Approved for Letter and S/U grading. May be repeated to 3 hours in a semester, up to a maximum of 12 total hours. Credit is not given for more than a total of 12 hours of Independent Study (IND) courses applying to a degree in ACES. Prerequisite: Junior standing and consent of instructor.

Companies are increasingly looking for employees with a variety of professional development skills beyond the applied scientific skills often learned in food & agriculture majors. This course will offer immersive experiences in key skills identified as critical for prospective employees, including problem-solving, systems and design thinking, building resiliency, teamwork, and developing a growth mindset. A mix of discussion, case studies, team exercises, and reflective exercises will be used.

Students will learn about human capital, protecting human capital and the conversion of human capital into wealth. Students will follow the progression of a family over multiple generations, exploring age and health oriented risks. The course will expose students to risk treatments including mitigation, avoidance and insurance. This will satisfy CFP® Board risk management learning objectives. Prerequisite: ACE 240 or any class teaching time value of money/compounding interest.

Email pdq@illinois.edu for the override. This seminar course is designed to provide students with a practical definition of “sustainability” and “nourishment” as it relates to the food industry. Students will hear presentations and interact in discussions by faculty and guest speakers on current food industry research and practices that fulfill the broad definition of both of these terms.

The students will demonstrate their proficiency in food product development through a team-based design project proposed by Griffith Foods, a client of the Discovery Partners Institute (DPI). The team will be required to develop a new alternative protein (plant, micro, insect, cellular) snacking food product idea designed to meet target protein nutrition requirements for children. This product must fulfill the Sustainability and Health & Nutrition goals outlined by Griffith Foods.
