SHOW FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

Credit: 3 hours.

Research, reading, and discussion in selected topics and works in literature of political science. A major research project is required in preparation for PS 495.

3 undergraduate hours. No graduate credit. May be repeated in separate terms to a maximum of 6 hours if topics vary. Credit is not given for non-honors courses and honors seminar on the same topic. Prerequisite: Admission to Political Science Honors Program or consent of department.

As part of the political science honors program, class will conduct original research projects with the potential to make a difference in our understanding of justice issues in the United States both locally and nationally. The first project will analyze visual depictions of lawbreakers in news coverage from the Champaign-Urbana area, focusing on the correspondence between the “face of crime” depicted in news media imagery and the real-world racial breakdown of arrests in the local area. A second project will examine news on police shootings in the United States. As part of a major research initiative of the campus’s Cline Center for Advanced Social Research (www.clinecenter.illinois.edu), this project will analyze which shootings are covered in the media and what types of information those news stories contain. This course will be an intense in terms of workload but exceptionally rewarding course for everyone involved. It will truly be a collaborative scholarly undertaking where faculty and students work together as a team to conduct research that will be distributed publicly. Questions?
