Section Title:
American Indian Politics
Section Info:
This course examines the place of American Indians — also collectively referred to as Indigenous peoples, Native Americans, or First Nations — in the United States political system. Some issues will be familiar to any course on American politics, such as voting behavior, interest group mobilization, identity, political economy, and environmental policies. However, these issues work differently in Indian Country because the pre-constitutional status of sovereign Indigenous nations in North America makes their political status unlike that of any other group of people in the United States. Understanding the political meaning of that sovereignty in the US political system will provide a central organizing theme in this course.
