Field based course that exposes students to procedures and methods used in various resource settings in a hands-on manner. Includes weekly field trips to visit representative natural resource and environmental science settings with supporting laboratory exercises. Content of offerings vary by section, but all focus on resource management, environmental quality and assessment, and effects of consumption and use on the environment. Field trips required.

Additional fees may apply. See Class Schedule. May be repeated in the same or subsequent semesters to a maximum of 6 hours. Prerequisite: NRES 201 and NRES 219.

The goal of this course is to engage students in the development of a climate action plan specific to the University of Illinois. Students will take their plan and integrate feasible ideas into the Illinois Climate Action Plan (iCAP) 2020 and assist in the presentation of that iCAP. There is no course fee for this section of NRES 285.

Illinois Sustainability
Section Info:
Introduces students to the importance of sustainability in the Public Policymaking process with emphasis on the policies and operations of key Illinois State Agencies including but not limited to the Depts of Natural Resources and Environmental Protections. Studies and evaluates various conceptual models and practices in sustainability public policy formulation at the state level. There are three required virtual field trips during the course meeting time with dates still to be determined.

Urban Ecology and Agriculture
Section Info:
This online field course focuses on aspects of sustainable agriculture and biodiversity in urban settings. Students will use their homes as hubs for examining land use and urbanization, food production systems, bird diversity, plant diversity, and urban habitats. Citizen science approaches will be explored. Lectures are integrated with hands-on activities and analysis of relevant data sets. There is no course fee for this section of NRES 285.
