Topic: Introduction to Chinese Linguistics. This class is an introduction to the scientific study of the Chinese language, including where it came from and how Chinese writing was invented. We will explore the Chinese dialects (e.g., Cantonese and Mandarin) and how Chinese is processed in the brain. Finally, we will investigate how children learn the language, how adults learn to speak Chinese as a foreign language, and how differences in the language influence social power and distance.
