This course requires 2 components for students participating in the HDFS 379/ANSC 398 service learning trip to Zimbabwe. Included are an 8 week course of study in preparation for the trip, and participation in educational activities while in Zimbabwe. In the eight week course leading up to the trip, students will learn about historic, economic, and political events in Zimbabwe, including the struggle for independence, political turbulence post-independence, and current economic, agricultural, and social challenges. Community resources in health care, agriculture, and animal care in Zimbabwe will be explored. On the trip visits will be included to Victoria Falls, national parks, private game reserve, sustainable eco-farms, and public healthcare facilities. Students interested in animal care will assist at an animal rescue farm and rhino conservancy. Students with medical, nursing and therapy interests will assist at a rural hospital and a children’s rehabilitation hospital. Throughout the trip, group discussion will continue, focusing on the dynamics of integration, animal science, medical and social services, food insecurity, and globalization in Zimbabwe. Estimated trip dates 2020 are May 15 through June 5. 3 credit hours is offered for the course and trip.
