Adorno's writings on art. While Benjamin never wrote an aesthetic theory and Theodor W. Adorno never published his during his lifetime, the seminar will focus on both thinker's theoretical writings under this umbrella term, which have proven to be of an enormous influence in philosophy, sociology, and cultural theory. Both Benjamin and Adorno -- representing or associated with the Frankfurt School -- wrote during and after the rise of fascism in Europe, a catastrophe that shaped their critical view of the time, including their concepts of art. Those concepts in turn incorporate political, sociological, economical, environmental, and metaphysical considerations. In which ways do both thinkers share a common program in their aesthetic theories? How, for example, are aesthetic questions linked to ethical considerations in their work? How do they understand art as a way of social critique? Of course also, where do they differ? And finally, in what regards are their concepts still alive and relevant today?
